Kelly Umlah
EDUCATION & OUTREACH COORDINATOR
Over the last decade, Kelly has been engaging children, youth, and adults in educational recreation programs centered around appreciating, understanding, and minimizing our impact on the Earth with Halifax's Adventure Earth programs. With a Master's degree in Coastal and Marine Management from the University Centre of the Westfjords in Iceland, their research focused on testing a novel method of deterring Arctic terns (Sterna paradisaea) from sitting on roadways. Kelly also worked for the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute of Iceland as the manager of the Ólafsvík research station; projects included coordinating and carrying out fish stock assessments and sorting invertebrates from benthic samples. Despite in-depth knowledge of a vast array of coastal and marine issues, her passion lies in the protection of salt marshes and other important habitats along the beautiful shores of the Maritimes. Kelly's main goal as Education and Outreach Coordinator is to spread knowledge, promote collaboration, and foster a deeper connection between us humans and the dynamic coasts we call home. Kelly is the main point of contact on the East coast for the Green Shores program.
