What is Green Shores for Homes?
Green Shores for Homes (GSH) is a voluntary, incentive-based rating program focused on promoting positive steps that reduce the impact of residential developments on shoreline ecosystems. GSH helps waterfront homeowners restore natural shorelines and enjoy the many recreational scenic, environmental, and shoreline protection benefits they bring.
Call for Homeowners
Do you have species at risk on your coastal or lakefront property? Hard armouring (seawalls, riprap, bulkheads, etc.) is often the default shoreline alteration method, but hard structures can be expensive and fragment or even destroy critical habitat for vulnerable species. Intensive landscaping, including mowing lawns right to the water, also reduces the habitat quality or completely removes habitat for species at risk. The GSH program offers nature-based and hybrid alternatives that minimize the impacts of erosion and flooding, restore shoreline habitat and function, and are often less expensive to build and maintain.
TransCoastal Adaptations is seeking TWO shoreline property owners from the Kespukwitk region to participate in the expansion of the GSH program in the Maritimes. These two property owners will each qualify for a FREE Green Shores for Homes project, including the cost of design, materials, implementation, GSH certification, and Green Shores technical support throughout the project!
Does your Shoreline Meet the Criteria?
The criteria outlined below are to ensure your property qualifies for both Green Shores for Homes and this offering specifically.
Criteria:
The property is on a coast or lakeshore, or along a section of tidally influenced river
At least one of the 18 target species at risk (see below) lives on or around your property’s shoreline
The homeowner is willing to allow TransCoastal Adaptations to:
a. Visit for a site assessment and
b. Use the shoreline project as a (written) case study
The shoreline has been altered from its natural state through hard armouring or mowing
The property owner is committed to following through with Green Shores for Homes certification

Funding and Support
This project is supported by Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Canadian Wildlife Service. Projects can be funded up to a maximum of $25,000 each. If selected projects do not use the entirety of funding, the extra may be used to fund smaller-scale projects to improve habitat quality and connectivity for species at risk.
