Dr. Jeremy Lundholm

Professor, Ecologist, Saint Mary’s University

Dr. Jeremy Lundholm is Professor and Chair of the Biology Department at Saint Mary's University. He has studied the role of plants in coastal ecosystems since 1996. His group, the Ecology of Plants in Communities lab, conducts ecological restoration studies in several types of vegetation. As a plant ecologist he developed an ecological approach to improving ecosystem services from green roofs. As a result of his research group's efforts, the number of ecological studies on vegetated roofs has increased dramatically. Along with his students he has conducted valuable baseline ecological surveys of coastal barrens and tidal marshes in Nova Scotia, linking vegetation to environmental gradients. His work has influenced provincial and municipal government policy. The main interests of the E.P.I.C. lab are to determine the mechanisms allowing plant species to coexist and the role of environmental heterogeneity in the function of ecosystems.
