Trip to the Mahone Bay Living Shoreline

Sunday, June 23rd

Drive down the picturesque South Shore to the Town of Mahone Bay, and visit the Mahone Bay Living Shoreline. A constructed salt marsh with rock sill and vegetated bank, this pilot project by Coastal Action is helping to increase flood and erosion protection along Edgewater Street, in front of the Town’s iconic three churches.

On the way, we will make a stop to CP Allen High School, to learn more about the Better With Bees project! This is a student run project, creating a Wabanaki meadow surrounding a Mi'kmaq Medicine Garden.

Snacks provided. No field gear is required, but this is a coastal environment, and weather is subject to quick change. Please dress accordingly.

Seats are limited. Drive to and from location is approximately 1 hour each way.

View the Bay of Fundy Tidal Bore from the onslow-North RIver Managed Dyke realignment and tidal wetland restoration site

The Bay of Fundy is home to the highest tides on Earth – visit the Onslow-North Managed Dyke Realignment Site to see the tidal bore come in! Learn more about the ~92 hectare restored tidal wetland and witness the enormous power of the Bay of Fundy.

Lunch is provided. This trip will take participants through a restored tidal marsh and footwear may get muddy. Please dress appropriately for weather and bugs.

Seats are limited. Drive to and from location is approximately 1 hour each way.

Chignecto isthmus and Upper Bay of Fundy tidal wetland Restoration Site Tour

Thursday, June 27th

Take a drive with us towards the Upper Bay of Fundy and the Tantramar marshlands. This trip will visit two managed dyke realignment and tidal wetland restoration sites, the Converse Marsh and the Aulac Marsh, with a short stop at the Fort Lawrence National Historic Site. On the way home, take a pit stop at the Masstown Market.

Lunch is provided (snacks can also be purchased at the Masstown Market). This trip will take participants through a restored tidal marsh and footwear may get muddy. Please dress appropriately for weather and bugs.

Seats are limited. Drive to and from location is approximately 2.5 hours each way.

Departure: 7:00 am, Return: 4:00 pm

Coastal wetland restoration in the Minas Basin: Restoration site tour and tidal wetland plant identification workshop

Thanks to the SER-EC, this workshop is FREE for students!

We will tour several coastal wetland restoration sites around the Minas Basin showcasing different vegetation communities. Optional tidal wetland plant identification workshop with separate instructor has 1 hr in class session before field trip begins. Students can register for this trip/workshop for free using code SEREC2024.

Lunch will be provided. This trip will take participants through field sites and footwear may get muddy. Please dress appropriately for weather and bugs.
